Brant, Charles S. (Editor) : The Autobiography of A Kiowa Apache Indian

  • leírás
  • további adatok
This is an unabridged republication of the 1969 work, published under the title JIM WHITEWOLF: THE LIFE OF A KIOWA APACHE INDIAN. "In 1949-50, Jim Whitewolf told his story, partly in English, partly in Apache, to the ethnographer Charles Brant. Now entirely in English, Jim Whitewolf's autobiography has been reproduced as closely as possible to the way he presented it. The autobiography recalls the events of Jim Whitewolf's long life, interpreted according to his own emphases and values. .. Whitewolf relates stories of his people dealing with heroic adventures from their recent history: early contact with white soldiers, raiding parties in Mexico, etc. Apart from the interest of events in Jim Whitewolf's life and his interpretation of them, this story is valuable as an account of an Indian growing up at an important moment in the history of his tribe. During his life, the old customes and way of life, the system of beliefs, etc. , were further abandoned and the society disintegrated under white influence.
