MEANING by MICHAEL POLANYI, HARRY PROSCH In this book we encounter philospher Polanyi's thoughts on the arts and religion. He contends that the creative imagination is the foundation of meaning and that the arts are equally normative forms of knowledge as science. Through our metaphorical expression in poetry, art, myth, and religion, our imaginations synthesize otherwise chaotic and disparate elements of our lives. Polanyi also sketches general conditions of a free society that would encourage various approaches to truth and the possibility for the acceptance of religion.
