Richter, David H. : Forms of the novella

  • description
  • additional information
Ten short novels from father of the Russian school Gogel (The Overcoat [1842]) to the psychodelic Pynchon (The Crying of Lot 49 [1966]). I bought this book at the Salvation Army (50 cents) because it had a couple of stories I wanted to reread. I ended up reading 9 of the 10. Thus, I was introduced to two great writers whose popularity post-dated my education (Chopin and Pynchon). I reread familiar stories from my school days and others I was familiar with but hadn't read. Are they the ten best novellas in existence? Probably no one would agree to that. However, they are wonderful and diverse examples of forms of the novella, Richter's intent. Speaking of the editor... His introduction is a worthy and intelligent analysis.
