The tale of The Son of the White Horse is one of the oldest int he treasury of hungarian folktales. We fin din itt he motif of the tree reaching up to the sky, and the enormous strength, gained by suckling for seven years, with which the hero overcomes Tree-tearer, Stone-crumbler and Iron-kneader. Later on he outwits the wicked little dwarf of the Hungarian folktales, the Seven-hearted Lobahobgoblin, conquers the twelve-headed dragon, and finally wins the hand of the prettiest princess.
The author of the work, László Arany (1844-1898) is an excellent writer, translator and collector of folklore from the last century. The rich illustrations are the work of Gabriella Hajnal painter and tapestry artist who has earned the highest recognition both at home and abroad. English translation by Elizabeth Szász.
