  • additional information

A traditional Ptolemaic-Aristotelian geocentric cosmography...

Piccolomini (1508 - 1579) was an Italian humanist and philosopher who promoted popularization in the vernacular of Latin and Greek scientific and philosophical treatises. In this astronomical treatise he adheres to the Ptolemaic theory, that the Earth is the center of the universe and other objects go around it... Both works were initially published in 1540. Ours is a later edition of Piccolomini's popular works (2 bound in a single volume, as is often the case, the title pages are separate and both works are not mentioned on page one "Delle stelle fisse" can legitimately be considered the first star atlas, and was immensely popular, having gone throughat least 14 editions (13 in Italian, 1 in Latin) before the end of the 16th century. The textual engravings and star charts did not change significantly from one edition to the next, and all 48 full-page woodcut maps of fixed-stars are present, all in near-fine condition. Picollomini's star maps did not include outlines of the classical mythologic figures. This is a landmark work in the history of celestial cartogaphy.
