Sur la carte de l'Europe les cités thermales apparaissent comme des étoiles définissant leur propre constellation ; leur nombre est vertigineux, leur scintillement féerique. La culture de l'eau naît de la volonté de magnifier le travail de la nature. L'hermalisme implique des " eaux spéciales ", mais le respect qu'elles inspirent ne se justifie pas seulement par leurs qualités thérapeutiques. " Prendre " ces eaux signifie aussi entrer en contact avec un temps archaïque. Les cités thermales constituent un excellent prétexte à la création d'une architecture originale. La vision simultanée de tous ces bâtiments permet d'apprécier leurs ressemblances et leurs différences ; éparpillés sur un énorme territoire - Pedras Salgadas au Portugal, Montecatini en Italie, Bad Homburg en Allemagne, Cheltenham en Angleterre, Contrexéville en France, Baden bei Wien en Autriche... -, ils composent un ensemble patrimonial d'une richesse insoupçonnée. Surgissant des ténèbres, ces eaux semblent animées par des forces obscures. Elles régénèrent, elles symbolisent la vie. L'attraction qu'elles exercent a permis l'éclosion d'une vaste culture.
