George Cruikshank (1792-1878) was born of Scottish parents in London, where he remained to satirize the social and political scenes of England. He was the best-known caricaturist of his day and was credited with the promotion of pictorial journalism: from drunkards to fops to the royal family, no one was safe from his barbs. He also was a prolific book illustrator, working with noted authors such as Charles Dickens. Some examples of Cruikshank’s illustrations are below.
