Haag, Sabine; Jasper Sharp (Ed.) : Mark Rothko

  • description
  • additional information
The Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien is presenting a retrospective exhibition of the American painter Mark Rothko (1903–1970) for the first time in Austria. The exhibition provides an overview of his most important stylistic developments, creating an exciting dialogue with the Museum’s own collections. It begins with a group of early figurative works, referencing Christian, Greek, Roman and Jewish iconography, it cont. Rothko’s travels through France and Italy in 1950 had an important influence on his work.

Major works on loan from Rothko’s own children and from some of the world’s great museums, most notably the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., offer a unique insight into one of the greatest artist who has ever lived. Rothko, after all, believed he was »producing an art that would last for 1,000 years«.
