First edition of a chess manual, a classic in its field, with 121 woodcut chess boards printed in gold, with the positions of the pieces printed in letterpress on the boards in red and black. The text volume starts with a general exposition of the rules of the game, followed by tables with the full proceedings of all the chess games depicted in the plates volume, accompanied by short explanations.
The work was published simultaneously at Strasbourg in a German translation and was translated into English in 1816. Both the French and the German went through several editions.
